Dior Date Code Explained: How to Read the Code Inside a Dior Bag
How to read a Dior date code: what the letters and numbers mean, how to decode the month and year, where the tab sits, and why a code alone proves nothing.

Quick answer
A Dior date code is a short code stamped on a small leather tab inside the bag. Authentication services describe codes from the early 2000s onward as two numbers, two letters and four numbers, such as 02-MA-0253: the letters stand for where the item was made, and the last four digits give the month from the first and third digits and the year from the second and fourth. Late-1990s codes have only the letters and four numbers. A correctly formatted code fits a period; it does not prove a bag is genuine.
Dior does not publish a guide to its date codes, and Vereev found no public Dior lookup for them, yet the code is one of the most searched Dior details. This guide explains how authentication services read the code, where to find it, and how to use it as a consistency check rather than as proof.
What a Dior date code is
Real Authentication, a US authentication service, says Dior began adding these codes around 1997, and LegitApp, another authentication service, places the start in the late 1990s. Both describe a code stamped on the back of a small leather tab inside the bag.
The code records production information: where an item was made and in which month and year, not who bought it.
How to read a Dior date code
Take a code such as 02-MA-0253. LegitApp calls the first two numbers a control number that can be ignored. The two letters identify where the item was made, and MA is the example both services give. The last four digits hold the date: the first and third digits give the month, and the second and fourth give the year.
Real Authentication says the two leading numbers were added in the early 2000s while the date format stayed the same, so a code without them points to an older item.
- 02-MA-0253: control number 02, made at MA, month 05 and year 23, so May 2023
- 0168 as the last four digits: month 06 and year 18, so June 2018 (LegitApp's example)
- MA-0959: a late-1990s code without leading numbers, month 05 and year 99, so May 1999 (Real Authentication's example)
Where to find the code
Both services describe the same places. In a handbag, the code is on the back of a small leather tab, usually the one whose front carries the Christian Dior Paris stamp. On some models it is on a separate tab hidden in the lining or in a pocket, and on wallets and small leather goods it is inside a pocket or along the edge of a card slot.
- Photograph both sides of the tab, in focus and without glare.
- Show where the tab is attached, so its position can be compared with the same model.
- Do not cut or unpick the lining to reach a hidden tab.
Checking the code against the bag
Decode the date and compare it with the model's history: when the model, material or design was released, and which hardware and lining it should have. A code dated before a design existed, or an older-style code on a recent model, needs an explanation.
Then compare the stamp itself with references for the same model and period: the typeface, spacing, depth and alignment of the characters, and how the tab is made and attached. LegitApp recommends the same checks of format, font, size and placement.
Newer Dior items and digital certificates
Dior has added digital identity to some products. NFC World reported in July 2023 that Dior's B33 sneakers came with an encrypted key that leads to a personal platform with the pair's certificate of authenticity and information about how it was made.
Vereev found no public Dior description of an NFC check for its bags. Where an item has no code or chip, compare it with the same model and period before drawing any conclusion.
What a date code cannot prove
Real Authentication says even counterfeit items feature correctly formatted date code stamps, and LegitApp says counterfeiters can copy the code. A neat code in the right format shows only that the tab claims a time and place of production.
Use the code with the exact model, Cannage or embroidery, leather, hardware, lining, edge work and the seller's evidence. Vereev is independent of Dior, and its review is not a Dior service decision.
Common questions
What readers ask about this topic
How do I read a Dior date code?
Ignore the first two numbers, note the two letters for where the item was made, then read the last four digits: the first and third give the month and the second and fourth the year. In 02-MA-0253 that is May 2023.
Where is the date code in a Dior bag?
Usually on the back of a small leather tab inside the bag, often the tab stamped Christian Dior Paris on the front. Some models have it on a tab in the lining or a pocket, and wallets inside a pocket or card slot.
Is there a Dior date code checker?
You can decode the month and year yourself, but Vereev found no public Dior lookup that confirms a code. A decoded date is a consistency check against the bag, not a verification.
Does a Dior date code prove a bag is authentic?
No. Authentication services note that counterfeits carry correctly formatted codes. The code has to agree with the model, materials, construction and hardware.
Do Dior products have NFC chips?
Some do. NFC World reported that Dior's B33 sneakers launched in July 2023 with an encrypted key leading to a certificate of authenticity. Vereev found no public Dior description of an NFC check for bags.
