Rimowa Authentication
How to tell if a Rimowa suitcase is real: collection and size, grooves, frame, locks and wheels, and what the serial number, NFC tag and certificate show.
Direct answer
To tell if a Rimowa suitcase is real, identify the collection, size and color, then compare the shell and grooves, frame, locks, wheels, telescopic handle and interior with Rimowa's listing and same-model references. Rimowa puts a serial number on the outside of the frame, usually near the hinge, and suitcases bought from January 1, 2023 carry an NFC tag that leads to registration and a digital Ownership Certificate. Both are supporting context, not proof.

How to approach Rimowa authentication
Collection, size and color
Name the collection and size, such as an Original Cabin, Classic Check-In M, Essential Trunk or Hybrid Trunk Plus, and record the shell material, finish and color before comparing anything.
Shell, frame and running gear
Compare the shell, grooves, frame, locks, Multiwheel wheels and telescopic handle with the same collection, remembering that Original and Classic are anodized aluminum, Essential is polycarbonate and Hybrid pairs a polycarbonate shell with an aluminum frame.
Serial number, NFC tag and branding
Photograph the serial number on the outside of the frame, scan the NFC tag behind the telescopic handle base on suitcases bought from 2023, and compare logos and badges with the same model and period.
Photos a reviewer needs
Photograph the whole case from every side, the top and side handles, the telescopic handle extended, all wheels, locks, hinges and the serial number, the interior and dividers, plus any tag, receipt or guarantee paperwork.

What to review on Rimowa items
Which Rimowa collection and size are you checking?
Start with the collection, size and color. Rimowa's suitcase collections include the aluminum Original and Classic, the polycarbonate Essential and Essential Lite, and the Hybrid, which pairs a polycarbonate shell with an anodized aluminum frame and corners.
Rimowa names sizes rather than numbering them, such as Cabin, Cabin S, Cabin Plus, Check-In M, Check-In L, Trunk and Trunk Plus, and not every collection comes in every size. Its product pages give each version's dimensions, weight and volume, such as 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 4.3 kg for a black Original Cabin.
Limited editions, collaborations and older lines need references from the same release, because comparing a case with the wrong collection or year is a common cause of false alarms.
- Collection and size name, matched to a Rimowa listing where possible
- Shell material and finish, such as anodized aluminum or matte or gloss polycarbonate
- Measured dimensions and weight compared with the listing for that version
- Purchase source and date, and any repair, replaced part or RE-CRAFTED history
What to compare on the shell, frame, locks and wheels
Rimowa describes the Original as high-end anodized aluminum with instantly recognizable grooves, TSA-approved locks, a stage-free telescopic handle and its Multiwheel system of ball-bearing mounted wheels with cushioned axles. The Classic adds leather grab handles, rivets engraved with a plane and shiny palladium locks, and Rimowa says the collection is crafted in its Cologne factory.
The Essential is high-performance polycarbonate with zippers and TSA-approved locks, while the Hybrid combines a polycarbonate shell with an anodized aluminum frame and corners and closes with TSA-approved latch locks. Reviewers compare groove spacing and alignment, frame and hinge fit, lock and wheel hardware, handle construction and interior layout with the same collection and size.
Used cases show cosmetic wear and tear, which Rimowa's lifetime guarantee does not cover, so scratches and dents say little about authenticity, and repaired parts can differ from catalog photos.
- Grooves: spacing, straightness and how they meet the frame
- Frame, hinges and corners: fit, finish and fasteners
- Locks: TSA locks, latch locks or zipper with lock, and their finish
- Wheels and telescopic handle: construction and smooth action
- Interior: lining, Flex Divider and compartments for that collection
Where is the Rimowa serial number, and what does the NFC tag do?
Rimowa says a serial number is present on all its suitcases and on specialty items, Personal collection pieces and aluminum iPhone cases, and that it sits on the outside of the frame near the hinge, with placement varying by model. Owners enter it to register a product in a Rimowa account.
Suitcases purchased from January 1, 2023 also have an NFC tag behind the telescopic handle at the base. Rimowa says scanning it leads to the registration process, and registration lets the owner retrieve a digital Ownership Certificate stored on the Aura Blockchain Consortium platform.
Rimowa's FAQ answers describe these as registration and ownership tools and do not explain any authenticity check for buyers. A serial number can be copied from a genuine case, and a suitcase purchased before 2023 is not expected to have the tag, so neither the number nor the tag decides the question alone.
What the guarantee and registration mean for a secondhand buyer
Rimowa offers a lifetime guarantee for new suitcases purchased from July 25, 2022, covering all functional aspects for the suitcase's lifespan, while earlier purchases have different terms. It says replica products are not covered by a Rimowa guarantee.
To claim, Rimowa asks for the completed certificate of guarantee or the original proof of purchase and decides whether a defect is covered. Its registration FAQ says a suitcase can be registered by the purchaser or by the person who received it as a gift, and a change of owner goes through customer service for a secure transfer of the product registration.
Before buying secondhand, ask what paperwork comes with the case and whether the seller will help transfer the registration. Paperwork supports a review only when its details match the suitcase.
Where to buy Rimowa and what the brand says about fakes
Rimowa says its products are available only through its own stores, rimowa.com, its official WeChat account and carefully selected partners, and that it does not authorize sales by street vendors, unauthorized retail locations or unauthorized websites. It asks anyone who finds counterfeit merchandise or unauthorized distributors to report them to its Client Service.
Rimowa also runs RE-CRAFTED, which takes pre-owned Rimowa aluminum suitcases at selected stores, checks each one to verify its authenticity, refurbishes it through 30 points of control and backs it with a two-year warranty.
For marketplace and private sales, the case itself has to carry the evidence. Use protected payment, ask for current photos and a short video of the actual case, and confirm that what arrives matches what was reviewed.
Do the luggage tag, receipt or certificate show a Rimowa is real?
Not on their own. Rimowa's product pages list a complimentary leather luggage tag and a sticker with new suitcases, but tags, stickers, boxes and receipts can be kept, moved or sold separately.
A digital Ownership Certificate lives in the owner's digital wallet and is tied to registration, so a screenshot from a seller is not a transfer. Every document helps only when its details agree with the exact case.
When should you get an item-level Rimowa review?
Get a review when the price, seller history or photos leave doubt, when parts have been replaced, or when a listing leans on a serial number, NFC scan, tag or receipt instead of the case itself.
Submit sharp photos of every side, the handles, wheels, locks, hinges and serial number, the interior and dividers, and any paperwork, plus a short video of the telescopic handle and wheels in use. A Vereev reviewer compares them with same-model references and notes what the photos can and cannot show.
Model-specific checks
Most-searched Rimowa models
Compare each piece with references for the same version, size, and period. These are the details a reviewer photographs and compares first.
Original
Rimowa's Original is its grooved aluminum suitcase, made of high-end anodized aluminum with TSA-approved locks, a stage-free telescopic handle and Multiwheel ball-bearing wheels. Its grooves, which Rimowa calls instantly recognizable, make it a frequent subject of real-versus-fake questions.
Check and photograph
- Size, such as Cabin, Check-In M or Trunk Plus, with measured dimensions
- Groove spacing and alignment with the frame
- TSA-approved locks, hinges and frame finish
- Multiwheel wheels and the stage-free telescopic handle
- Serial number on the outside of the frame and, for 2023 and later purchases, the NFC tag
Classic
The Classic is Rimowa's heritage-styled aluminum line, with leather grab handles, rivets engraved with a plane, shiny palladium locks and a leather insert on the telescopic handle, crafted in Rimowa's Cologne factory. Its leather and hardware details give a reviewer more to compare than the shell alone.
Check and photograph
- Leather grab handles and the leather insert on the telescopic handle
- Rivets and their plane engraving
- Shiny palladium locks and hinge fit
- Size, such as Cabin, Cabin S, Check-In M, Check-In L or Trunk
- Serial number placement and condition
Essential
The Essential is Rimowa's polycarbonate line in matte and gloss finishes, with zippers, TSA-approved locks, Multiwheel wheels and a Flex Divider inside. Essential, Essential Lite and Essential Sleeve are separate versions, so the reference must match the exact one.
Check and photograph
- Exact version: Essential, Essential Lite or Essential Sleeve
- Matte or gloss finish and color for that version
- Zippers, pulls and TSA-approved lock
- Wheels, telescopic handle and interior Flex Divider
- Dimensions and weight against Rimowa's listing
Hybrid
The Hybrid pairs a polycarbonate shell with an anodized aluminum frame and corners and closes with TSA-approved latch locks. With two materials in one case, both the shell and the frame have to match the reference.
Check and photograph
- Polycarbonate shell finish and color
- Aluminum frame and corners: fit and finish
- TSA-approved latch locks
- Multiwheel wheels and stage-free telescopic handle
- Interior Flex Dividers for that size
Warning signs
When Rimowa items need a closer look
Each sign is a reason to ask more questions or get an item-level review. None is a verdict on its own.
- The listing shows the serial number, an NFC scan or a certificate screenshot but not the full case, handles, wheels and interior.
- The case is sold by a street vendor or a website that is neither Rimowa's own nor one of its selected partners, channels Rimowa says it does not authorize.
- Grooves, frame, locks, wheels or handles do not match Rimowa's listing for the claimed collection and size.
- Measured dimensions or weight differ clearly from Rimowa's listing for that version.
- The serial number is missing, hard to read, or shown only in a tight close-up without the rest of the frame.
- A suitcase said to be bought in 2023 or later has no working NFC tag and no purchase record.
- The price is well below comparable cases of the same collection and condition, especially with pressure to pay quickly or off-platform.
- Paperwork, tags or receipts name a different collection, size or color from the case.

Rimowa authentication FAQ
How can I tell if my Rimowa is real?
Identify the collection, size and color, then compare the shell, grooves, frame, locks, wheels, handles and interior with Rimowa's listing and same-model references. Treat the serial number, NFC scan and paperwork as supporting evidence that must agree with the case.
Where is the serial number on a Rimowa suitcase?
Rimowa says it is on the outside of the frame near the hinge, though placement can vary by model.
Can a Rimowa serial number confirm authenticity?
Rimowa uses the serial number to register products in a Rimowa account, and its public FAQ does not describe a serial lookup for buyers. A serial can be copied from a genuine case, so it only supports a review when the case itself matches.
What does the Rimowa NFC tag do?
On suitcases purchased from January 1, 2023, Rimowa says the tag behind the telescopic handle leads to its registration process, which lets the owner retrieve a digital Ownership Certificate. An earlier suitcase without a tag is not unusual.
Does Rimowa authenticate used suitcases?
Rimowa's RE-CRAFTED program says it checks each pre-owned aluminum suitcase brought to a selected store to verify its authenticity before refurbishing it. Its public pages do not describe an authentication service for suitcases bought elsewhere.
Are fake Rimowa suitcases covered by the guarantee?
No. Rimowa says replica products are not covered by a Rimowa guarantee, and it requests the completed certificate of guarantee or original proof of purchase when a claim is made.
