Rimowa Serial Number, NFC Tag and Ownership Certificate Explained

Rimowa says a serial number is present on all its suitcases as well as on specialty items, Personal collection pieces and aluminum iPhone cases. Its registration FAQ calls it the suitcase's unique serial number and asks for it on the online form used to register a product in a Rimowa account.

Suitcases purchased from January 1, 2023 also have an integrated NFC tag. Rimowa says scanning it with a smartphone redirects the owner to the registration process, and that registering lets the owner retrieve a Rimowa Ownership Certificate.

Rimowa describes the certificate as a unique digital identity card for the suitcase, based on information stored on the Aura Blockchain Consortium platform, and says it is digital only and kept in the owner's digital wallet. It describes that consortium as promoting a single global blockchain platform open to all luxury brands.

Rimowa's FAQ says to look for the serial number on the outside of the frame near the hinge, and notes that placement might vary depending on the model.

On suitcases purchased from January 1, 2023, Rimowa says the NFC tag is integrated behind the telescopic handle at the base of the suitcase. Rimowa ties the tag and the Ownership Certificate to suitcases bought from that date, so an earlier suitcase without a tag is not unusual.

Do not confuse the serial number with the product reference on a Rimowa listing, such as 92553014 for a black Original Cabin on rimowa.com, which names a product rather than one suitcase.

Rimowa says registration is possible for all serialized products through the Register My Rimowa section after signing in to My Account, where the online form asks for personal data and the serial number. It also says registration is no longer possible for products purchased before 2014.

For suitcases purchased from January 1, 2023, Rimowa's tutorial lists three steps: make sure NFC reading is activated, place the phone close to the tag, and tap the notification that appears to begin registration. After registering, the owner can choose to get the certificate and add it to a digital wallet, which Rimowa says is not mandatory.

Rimowa says anyone who scans the tag cannot access the owner's personal information, which is only available when the owner is logged in, and that NFC tags cannot track the suitcase's location. It also says a suitcase can be registered by the purchaser or by the person who received it as a gift.

Rimowa's FAQ answers describe the serial number, NFC tag and certificate as tools for registration, guarantee information and ownership, and do not explain any public authenticity check. They do not describe a serial-number lookup for buyers or say what a scan confirms about a suitcase.

The serial number sits on the outside of the frame, so it can be photographed and copied onto another case. A registration or certificate belongs to an owner's account and wallet, and Rimowa handles a change of owner through customer service, so a seller's screenshot is not a transfer.

Treat each of these as one piece of evidence that must agree with the suitcase itself: its collection, size, materials, hardware, condition and paperwork.

Rimowa ties the NFC tag to suitcases purchased from January 1, 2023, so an earlier suitcase without one is not a warning sign by itself. Rimowa also says registration is no longer possible for products purchased before 2014, so an older case that cannot be registered is not shown to be fake by that alone.

If a tag does not respond, check that NFC reading is on, remove a thick phone case and try holding the phone at a different angle. A failed scan is a reason for closer review, not a verdict.

For secondhand purchases, Rimowa says a change of owner should go through its customer service for a secure transfer of the product registration, and it reserves the right to reclaim the certificate of any returned item. Ask the seller how registration, the certificate and any guarantee paperwork will be handled before you pay.

Use the serial number and any scan alongside the exact collection and size, the shell and grooves, frame, locks, wheels, telescopic handle, interior, condition and the seller's evidence. They carry the most weight when all of these agree.
