How to Tell if Chow Tai Fook Gold Is Real

No single check proves Chow Tai Fook gold is real, and one seller paid about RMB 20 for forged papers. Run 7 checks in order and see what each one proves.

Quick answer

No single check proves Chow Tai Fook gold is real. Check in this order: the seller, the mark, the receipt and weight, the official slip check if you bought in mainland China, a Chow Tai Fook store, the report on any diamond, and a lab test. Only a lab test is known to examine the metal, a surface reading alone can be fooled, and papers have been forged.

Run the seven checks below in order on your Chow Tai Fook (CTF) piece, and skip any that do not apply. Most are weak alone, so the first table shows what each one is worth. If you are about to buy second-hand, start with the before-you-pay list. If you already bought and doubt the piece, start with what to do now.

Why no single check settles it

Sing Tao Headline and Daily Business News both reported one case on 22 March 2024. A Shanghai buyer got a 足金 bracelet from a second-hand platform. Sing Tao reported that the 45.11 g bracelet held about 10 g of gold and 35 g of silver. It came with a certificate and invoice, passed a torch test and matched on weight. It was exposed only when it was cut.

Daily Business News quoted a police officer as saying that the seller paid about RMB 20 for a forged set: delivery note, warranty slip, hang tag and invoice. The invoice used CTF's gold price for the purchase day, and a Chow Tai Fook bag was added. Police arrested the suspect on 1 March 2024. Nothing in the reports says CTF sold this piece.

CTF advises buying from reputable merchants, checking the fineness mark and asking for an official receipt, and calls this the strongest defense against fake gold. Reported cases show that marks and receipts can both be forged. So treat each check below as one piece of evidence, and use the table to see what it is worth.

1. Who sold it? Compare the shop with Chow Tai Fook's own list

Worth: strong for a new purchase, no help with a private resale.

CTF Mall, the company's mainland China online mall, publishes a list of official online stores. The table copies the list dated 11 September 2026. Compare the exact shop name, and check the live list in the sources, because it can change. CTF Mall delivers only within mainland China, so an offer to ship a CTF Mall order to Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or overseas does not fit.

  • Hong Kong channels: CTF's statement of 10 May 2024 lists www.chowtaifook.com, the Facebook page Chow Tai Fook Jewellery 周大福珠寶, Instagram chowtaifookjewellery, WeChat 港澳周大福, hotline (852) 2526 8649 and email enquiry@chowtaifook.com.
  • Old eShop address: a 2022 statement named www.ctfeshop.com.hk. The May 2024 list drops it. When checked on 2 November 2026, the old address did not respond and the eShop ran under chowtaifook.com. Do not enter details on the old address.
  • Laos: on 31 January 2024 CTF said shops in Laos, some in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Bokeo Province, trade under 周大福, CHOW TAI FOOK and two Lao-language marks. It says it has no link to them and never authorized them.
  • False sites: on 13 September 2022 and 10 May 2024 CTF warned of a website operating in its name, and of websites, Facebook posts and false promotions outside its official channels.
  • Unauthorized shops: China Consumer News reported on 6 February 2025 that Yongkang's consumer committee bought 46 online gold items for lab tests. A necklace sold online as CTF 18K tested below 750‰. CTF said the shop was not authorized. The report does not say whether the necklace was counterfeit.
  • Similar names: a similar company name is not evidence of counterfeiting. See the names table in the Chow Tai Fook authentication hub.
  • What to do: if a shop is not on the list or among these channels, confirm it with CTF before you pay.

2. Read the mark on the piece

Worth: expected on most pieces, weak alone, because a mark only states a claim.

Look for a fineness mark such as 足金, 999 or 750. CTF says its gold pieces are engraved with a clear statutory purity mark, and its Chinese guide says compliant 足金 also shows the brand's maker code. On a mainland piece, the hallmark must include the maker's code, the metal and the purity, according to a consumer guide from Zhejiang consumer councils (Xinhua, 11 September 2026). Hong Kong law (Cap. 362A) requires a mark on gold supplied at retail, but lists no maker code.

No official photo or description of Chow Tai Fook's maker code, or of how its stamp looks or where it sits on gold, was found. So there is no public official reference to compare your stamp with. In Hong Kong, a piece too small or thin to mark that weighs under 1 g may lawfully have no mark.

What to do: photograph the mark, then check that it agrees with the receipt. What each mark means, by place, is in the Chow Tai Fook gold marks guide.

3. Match the receipt, tag and weight

Worth: catches careless fakes, proves nothing.

CTF says each of its gold items comes with a printed sales receipt giving material, weight and purity. A Hong Kong receipt must show the supplier's full name and address, the price, the date, the mark and its fineness, plus the weight for articles of 999 or finer (Cap. 362A). The Zhejiang guide says a mainland invoice should show name, material, purity, weight and price.

Check who issued the invoice. From 6 January 2026 CTF Mall issues invoices as 周大福珠宝金行(深圳)有限公司. Orders paid before that date were handled by 深圳周大福在线传媒有限公司. This notice covers the mall only, not physical stores.

Weigh the piece and compare it with the receipt. In its statement of 6 June 2025, CTF gives its account of one dispute: it says two necklaces were not pieces it sold, since their appearance differed and their weight differed from its sale record. A mismatch is a warning. A match proves little: the Shanghai bracelet matched on weight, and its forged invoice even used CTF's gold price for the purchase day.

A box or bag shows little, because CTF's eShop pages say boxes are chosen by item and a paper bag is by request. What to do: weigh the piece in the same unit as the receipt, and keep a photo of the scale reading next to the receipt.

Gold bangles and cuffs on red velvet stands in a shop window, each with a small white tag showing a weight figure.
Gold bangles in a Hong Kong goldsmith window in January 2017, a Chow Tai Fook shop according to the photographer's file title, each with a small white tag showing its weight in taels (兩重). Compare a stated weight with your receipt and a scale, in the same unit. Hang tags have also been reported forged, so a tag proves nothing alone. The items shown were not checked by Vereev. 4. Bought in mainland China? Run the official slip check

Worth: proves the slip, not the piece.

CTF Mall's 商品核验 page covers guarantee slips from mainland purchases since 28 April 2016, except some channels, including JD self-operated and ENZO. CTF also gives the code a valid maintenance period of one year, without saying how that affects older slips. If you bought in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan or elsewhere, no such check was found, so go to check 5.

CTF says the check proves only that the slip came from a sale through a regular channel. It does not show that the piece in your hand is the one that was sold. If it passes, take the piece to a store, which is the next check. The fields, exclusions and failed results are in the guide to checking a Chow Tai Fook guarantee slip.

5. Take it to a Chow Tai Fook store

Worth: in mainland China, the one route where CTF staff examine the piece, though it depends on papers and the method is not stated. Other places describe their store services differently, so do not assume they are the same.

  • Mainland China: CTF says jewelry bought in its online or offline stores gets a free in-store genuineness re-check at any specialty store, on showing the guarantee slip. CTF Mall's after-sales notice asks for the stamp (字印) and the slip, and covers CTF, Hearts On Fire, ENZO, MONOLOGUE and SOINLOVE.
  • Hong Kong: for pieces bought from CTF's Hong Kong eShop or branches, any branch lists cleaning and checking among its after-sales services, with the sales invoice. CTF does not call this a genuineness check, and reserves the right to change or cancel these services. The eShop has no repair by post.
  • Singapore: for pieces bought from CTF there, Singapore branches list professional cleaning and complimentary quality inspection, with the sales invoice. CTF does not call this a genuineness check.
  • United States: the US page repeats the Singapore wording, so it says nothing usable about US service.
  • Diamonds: CTF's Hong Kong site says consultants in its stores can test a diamond with instruments. It does not say whether this covers items bought elsewhere, or whether there is a fee.
  • What to do: no published answer was found for a piece with no slip or one bought second-hand. So call first, on 400-166-9999 in mainland China or (852) 2526 8649 in Hong Kong.

6. Diamond pieces: compare the report with the stone

Worth: checks paper against a database, and then you compare it with the stone.

CTF says only that some diamonds come with a GIA report, so do not assume yours has one. GIA says Report Check confirms that the information on a report matches its database. That checks the paper, not the stone in your hand. CTF says a GIA report usually carries a number matching a laser inscription on the girdle, and advises confirming that the grades, shape and weight on the report match the stone.

CTF's Hong Kong diamond guide, read on 2 November 2026, says it offers only natural diamonds, and that GIA or IGI reports state which kind a stone is. So if a report on a Chow Tai Fook diamond says the stone is not natural, ask the seller about it. CTF also says each T·MARK diamond holds a unique serial code. The steps are in the certificate check guide.

7. Test the metal at a lab when the amount justifies it

Worth: the only route here known to test the metal, at a cost. Hidden metal may show only when part of the piece is cut or dissolved.

CTF's consumer rules for its mainland China online platform, updated 15 October 2026, say a dispute over gold weight is settled by a report from a state-certified lab. Before you rely on a lab report, check it as the certificate check guide explains. The test has limits too. China Consumer News reported on 6 February 2025 that cheap gold-over-silver and thin foil items are hard to test without destroying them, and that for such items a single test can cost far more than the item.

What to do: compare the likely cost with the value of the piece first. The guide on how to test gold at home explains which tests miss what.

Buying second-hand Chow Tai Fook: ask these before you pay

Ask for these items, then run the checks above on the answers. A private sale gives you no official shop to compare, so the other checks matter more.

  • A clear photo of the stamp.
  • The receipt or slip, showing the date, material and weight.
  • If the seller has the guarantee slip from a mainland China purchase, ask to meet at a Chow Tai Fook store and pay only after staff examine the piece. Call the store first, because no published rule says it will re-check a second-hand piece.
  • Where the piece was first bought, so you can compare that shop with the list above.
  • The return rules, confirmed first. The Zhejiang jewelry trade association advised this in China Consumer News on 6 February 2025. It also advised care with prices clearly below the Shanghai Gold Exchange price, doubt about inflated purity claims, and third-party tests for doubtful items.
  • A written agreement that you can return the piece if a store or lab disagrees with the seller.
  • A test you choose yourself. In the Daily Business News report of 22 March 2024, the director of a Ningbo testing center warned buyers not to trust test certificates supplied by dishonest sellers. China Consumer News reported on 6 February 2025 that for cheap gold-over-silver or foil items, seller promises of a retest, with triple compensation if fake, mean little, because a test can cost more than the item.
  • A price you can compare. On 2 November 2026 CTF Mall listed retail 足金 jewelry at RMB 1,168 per gram, with labor extra on some goods. This changes daily, so see the live page in the sources. The Shanghai rumor-refuting platform (Cailian Press, 6 May 2024) advises wariness of prices far below the benchmark, avoiding small e-commerce shops, and keeping receipts.
  • Price is still no test alone. CTF says the same design can differ in price because of production date and material cost, and its sites show discounts.

Already bought it and think it is fake? What to do now

Keep the listing, the chat messages, the payment record, the packaging and the papers. Do not cut, burn or alter the piece yourself, because you may need it as evidence. Then use the return route that fits your purchase, and get a second opinion from a store or a lab.

  • CTF Mall: its after-sales notice, read on 2 November 2026, allows returns without a reason within 7 days after signing for the delivery. Investment gold, crafted bars and medals, pre-orders and custom pieces are excluded. The piece must be unworn, with all documents. This does not cover physical stores.
  • Hong Kong eShop: its Return Guarantee page, read on 2 November 2026, allows a return request within 5 calendar days of receipt. Promotion, discounted and eOUTLET items, gold pellets and some others are excluded. You need the sales receipt, the packaging and any accessories such as a certificate, and you can claim once every 6 months per delivery address.
  • Other sellers: use the seller's return rules and the marketplace's buyer protection while they are open.
  • Police: CTF's statement of 10 May 2024 tells anyone deceived to report to the police.
  • Hong Kong law: sections 7 and 9 of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance ban false trade descriptions and forged trade marks. The section 18 maximum on indictment is a HK$500,000 fine and 5 years in prison (version dated 24 August 2026). This is not legal advice.
  • Hong Kong Customs: the Government told LegCo on 17 December 2014 that Customs investigated 15 cases of suspected false gold or fineness claims from January 2012 to November 2014. It prosecuted one and found insufficient evidence for prosecution in the other 14. The reply gives no reason. Still, the numbers suggest such cases are hard to prove, so keep your evidence.

What no photo or home check can prove

A photo or a home check cannot see inside metal. The police officer in the Daily Business News report said the gold and silver in the Shanghai bracelet were fused together, so nothing visible gave it away without cutting.

A Vereev review looks at the marks, workmanship, packaging and papers, not metal purity. An Authentic result does not mean the metal was measured. AI assists and human experts decide, and the reviewer may ask for more photos. If the photos cannot settle it, your tokens are refunded. Vereev is independent and issues no Chow Tai Fook certificate.

A photo review helps when no Chow Tai Fook store is near you, or when you want the marks and papers checked first. To order, search Chow Tai Fook in the Vereev app. If your version of the app does not list it yet, type its full name and continue. The app shows the cost before you confirm.

Common questions

What readers ask about this topic

How can I tell if my Chow Tai Fook gold is real?

Run several checks, because none is enough alone: the seller, the mark, the receipt and weight, the slip check for mainland purchases, and a store visit. Only a lab test is known to examine the metal, and it may need to cut into the piece to find hidden metal. A fake that Sing Tao Headline reported on 22 March 2024 passed a torch test and matched on weight.

Does a Chow Tai Fook receipt or warranty slip prove the gold is real?

No. In a case reported by Daily Business News on 22 March 2024, the seller paid about RMB 20 for a forged delivery note, warranty slip, hang tag and invoice. CTF says its own slip check proves only that the slip came from a regular-channel sale.

Does a Chow Tai Fook bag or box prove anything?

Very little. CTF's eShop pages say boxes are chosen by item and a paper bag is by request, and a Chow Tai Fook bag was added to the forged set in the Shanghai case that Daily Business News reported on 22 March 2024.

How do I check a second-hand Chow Tai Fook bangle before buying?

Ask for a clear stamp photo, the receipt or slip with date, material and weight, and where it was first bought. Confirm the return rules, and agree in writing that you can return it if a store or lab disagrees.

Is a big per-gram discount on Chow Tai Fook gold a sign of a fake?

It is a reason for care, not a test. The Zhejiang jewelry trade association advised care with prices clearly below the Shanghai Gold Exchange price (China Consumer News, 6 February 2025), but CTF's own sites also show discounts. Check that the shop running the offer is on CTF's official store list or among its listed channels.

Why does the same Chow Tai Fook design have different prices?

CTF says prices can differ for the same design because of production date and material cost, and for diamonds because of shape and the 4Cs. So a different price is not by itself a sign of a fake.

Will a Chow Tai Fook store re-check a piece I bought second-hand?

No published answer was found. CTF describes its mainland re-check for jewelry bought in its stores, on showing the guarantee slip. Call 400-166-9999 or (852) 2526 8649 before you travel.

Are shops using the Chow Tai Fook name abroad official?

Not always. CTF's own sites cover places such as Hong Kong and Singapore, but on 31 January 2024 CTF said shops in Laos trading under its marks have no link to it. Confirm any shop abroad through CTF's official channels before you pay.

What should I do if I bought a fake Chow Tai Fook piece online?

Keep the listing, chats, payment record, packaging and papers, and do not cut, burn or alter the piece yourself. Use the seller's return rules or the marketplace's protection. CTF's statement of 10 May 2024 tells anyone deceived to report to the police.
