Is Pandora Real Silver? Sterling, Plated and Gold Explained
Pandora says its jewelry is mainly sterling silver and gold, but some lines are plated over an alloy. Dated facts on each line and how to test the metal.

Quick answer
Much of it is. Pandora describes its jewelry as made mainly from solid sterling silver and 14k or 18k gold, and S925 means 92.5% pure silver. But not every genuine piece is silver. Some gold-plated pieces have used Pandora's own metal blend, and platinum-plated pieces on an alloy core were in a pilot in the Netherlands as of August 2026. A metal test shows the metal, not the maker.
Real silver and real Pandora are two different questions. A piece can be silver and not Pandora. A piece can be genuine Pandora and not silver. This guide covers the first question: what Pandora has said each line is made of, with dates, why pieces change color, and how to test the metal. Advice that real Pandora is always silver was never fully right. Pandora has sold gold and gold-plated pieces for years, some plated over its own metal blend. It also says a significant part of its jewelry will move from silver to platinum-plated during the next few years. For the marks, use our stamp guide. For the brand question, use our real vs fake guide.
Is Pandora real silver? The short answer
Pandora's page on identifying authentic products describes its jewelry as hand-finished and made mainly from solid sterling silver and 14k or 18k gold, with gemstones, stones, cultured pearls and glass. That page does not discuss plated lines. Pandora's US site, in a copy saved on 27 April 2024, called silver its signature metal, used for most of its jewelry.
S925 means 92.5% pure silver, and Pandora applies that mark itself. So a stamp states what the maker claims. Only a metal test can show what metal a given piece contains, and plating can limit what a test shows.
What each Pandora line is made of, with dates
Pandora's statements differ by date, so every row below carries one. No row tells you what a line is made of today in every market. Pages from 2020 describe Pandora Shine as 18k gold plate on sterling silver. They describe Pandora Rose as 14k rose gold plate on a metal blend. Pandora also says its EVERSHINE alloy core, introduced in 2015, has been used in its gold-plated products. Its US site in 2024 described gold-plated collections on its own metal blend. So both builds exist across time, and no source we read says when or whether Pandora Shine itself changed.
Pandora says it uses copper in some alloys, including rose gold and plated products. Its Materials Standard of November 2021 lists gold, silver, copper, stainless steel, zinc, palladium, platinum, rhodium and other platinum-group metals, but it does not say which metal goes in which product.
| Line | What Pandora said | Date and source |
|---|---|---|
| Rhodium-plated sterling silver | One of three types of plating it listed at that time. | Singapore guide, saved 24 Sep 2020 |
| Pandora Shine | A sterling silver core, coated first with palladium, then with 18k gold. | Launched March 2018. Annual Report 2018 and Canada FAQ, saved 12 Aug 2020 |
| Pandora Rose | A unique blend of metals, with 14k rose gold plate. | Global launch 2016. Annual Report 2016 and Singapore guide, 2020 |
| 14k gold-plated and 14k rose gold-plated | Plated over Pandora's own metal blend, and listed apart from sterling silver. | US site, saved 27 Apr 2024 |
| PANDORA EVERSHINE core | A metal alloy used in its gold-plated products. No page we read gives its composition. | Introduced 2015. Press release, 4 Feb 2026 |
| PANDORA ESSENCE | Sterling silver, 14K plated gold and cultured pearls, described as a gold-plated range. | Launched Q2 2024. Press release, 2024, and Annual Report 2025 |
| Platinum-plated on EVERSHINE | A limited range in a pilot. | Netherlands, from July 2026. Announcement, 12 Aug 2026 |
- Find your line on the receipt or the listing, then read the row with the closest date.
- PANDORA ESSENCE is not the ESSENCE charm and bracelet collection of November 2013, which shares the name.
Why Pandora plans more pieces that are not silver
On 4 February 2026, Pandora announced platinum-plated jewelry built on its EVERSHINE alloy core, partly to rely less on silver after silver and gold prices rose. Its Annual Report 2025 says parts of its silver assortment will gradually move to this build, using third-party plating at first and then its facilities in Thailand and Vietnam. Its Q2 2026 investor presentation says a significant part of its jewelry will move from silver to platinum-plated during the next few years.
The last status we read is from August 2026. A pilot of a limited range began in the Netherlands in July 2026. A broader test of selected designs across markets was planned for Q4 2026, and the scaled rollout is planned for 2027. In February, Pandora had planned a global launch in the second half of 2026.
So a missing S925 cannot by itself mark a piece as fake. Our stamp guide explains what is and is not known about the marks.
Recycled metal is a separate change. Pandora says it stopped sourcing newly mined silver and gold in December 2023, has crafted all its jewelry with recycled silver and gold since August 2024, and lists 2025 as the year it sells only such jewelry. Its lab-grown page says some older Infinite pieces in mixed metals are still on sale. None of this applies to older pieces.
Why Pandora tarnishes or loses color
Pandora says all sterling silver tarnishes over time, and faster with perfume, salty air, skin creams, chlorine and sweat. Pandora Canada's FAQ, in a copy saved on 12 August 2020, said plating can wear faster on rings and charms than on earrings and necklaces, and that the gold color of Pandora Shine pieces dulls slightly over time. Pandora Singapore's warranty, in a copy saved on 30 November 2025, excluded tarnish and normal wear.
Grace & Co, a UK retailer that describes itself as a Pandora stockist, says fake charms tend to tarnish fast. That is a sign over time, not a test, and Pandora says genuine sterling silver tarnishes as well. So tarnish alone says nothing about whether a piece is genuine.
- To slow tarnish, keep silver away from those things when you can.
Are the stones and diamonds real?
Pandora says it stopped using mined diamonds in 2021 and now uses only lab-grown diamonds. It says they are made with Chemical Vapor Deposition, then cut and polished like mined diamonds. In September 2024 it said it had stopped using mined gemstones and uses man-made stones such as cubic zirconia.
Older stock may differ. Pandora's Materials Standard of November 2021 still listed natural stones, in much smaller volumes, so we make no claim about older pieces.
Pandora's first lab-grown line launched as Pandora Brilliance in the UK from 6 May 2021, and in the US and Canada from 25 August 2022. A June 2026 release calls Pandora Infinite the inaugural collection, so either name is possible on older pieces. Pandora described the diamonds in its new 2023 lab-grown collections as excellent cut, near colorless, VS+ clarity, 0.15 to 1 carat.
We found no Pandora statement on grading certificates. A photo cannot show what a stone is made of, so ask a jeweler.
How to test the metal, and what that proves
A professional test is the way to check the metal, within limits. A jeweler or an assay office can tell you what testing they offer. In the UK, Birmingham Assay Office tests items with X-ray fluorescence before hallmarking. Assay Office London mainly uses non-destructive X-ray fluorescence and takes metal samples only in a few cases.
Plating makes this harder. A US patent assigned to Olympus says its X-ray fluorescence instrument can only conclude solid gold or thick coating above a set thickness. This is one patent, not a standard, but it is a good reason to tell the tester that a piece may be plated.
If you have a result, read it with care. FTC guides, which apply in the US, say calling a product sterling may mislead unless it is at least 925/1000 silver. The tolerance is 4 parts per thousand, or 10 where the tested part contains solder.
A metal test shows the metal, not the maker. A Vereev photo review cannot test purity.
| Test | What it can show | Its limit |
|---|---|---|
| X-ray fluorescence | A non-destructive reading of the metal, used by the Birmingham and London assay offices. | One patent says its instrument cannot tell solid gold from a thick gold coating. |
| Cupellation (fire assay) | Gold content. ISO 11426:2021 sets it out for gold. | We read only the abstract of the standard, and it covers gold only. |
| Magnet at home | GoodStone, a US jeweler, says a silver charm that sticks to a magnet is not sterling. | It can only rule out a sterling claim. It does not apply to alloy-core pieces. |
| Photo review | An opinion on the whole piece, including its marks and finish. | It cannot test metal purity. |
If the metal or the piece seems wrong
A test result clearly below the stamped purity is a reason to go back to the seller and use the return route. So is a sterling claim on a piece that sticks to a magnet, because GoodStone says sterling silver is not magnetic. Keep the test result with your purchase evidence.
Then report the seller in English to Pandora's Brand Protection team, through its page called Reporting brand and product violations on pandoragroup.com. Send where you bought the piece or saw it advertised, a link, product photos and your receipt.

Common questions
What readers ask about this topic
Is Pandora silver real?
Pandora says its jewelry is made mainly from solid sterling silver and 14k or 18k gold, and S925 means 92.5% pure silver. The stamp is Pandora's own mark, not an outside test, and copies can carry similar marks. Only a metal test can show what metal a given piece contains, and plating can limit what a test shows.
Are Pandora bracelets real silver?
Many are, but not all. Pandora said in 2018 that its new Reflexions bracelets came in sterling silver, Pandora Rose and Pandora Shine, and it has other plated ranges. Check the line and the marks, and use a jeweler's test if the metal matters to you.
Is Pandora Shine real gold?
Pandora describes it as gold plating, not solid gold. It launched Shine in March 2018 as a sterling silver core coated with palladium and then 18k gold. Later Pandora pages describe other gold-plated pieces over a metal blend, and no source we read says if Shine itself changed.
Is Pandora Rose real gold?
Pandora describes it as plated. Its Singapore guide, saved in September 2020, described Pandora Rose as 14k rose gold plate over a metal blend, and it said in 2016 that the blend gives Rose its color. We make no claim about what it is made of today in every market.
What is Pandora EVERSHINE?
Pandora says EVERSHINE is a metal-alloy core, introduced in 2015, that has been used in its gold-plated products. It is also the core of its platinum-plated jewelry, which was in a limited pilot in the Netherlands as of August 2026. We found no page that gives the alloy's composition.
Why is my silver Pandora tarnishing?
Pandora says all sterling silver tarnishes over time, and faster with perfume, salty air, skin creams, chlorine and sweat. Tarnish alone says nothing about whether a piece is genuine.
Are Pandora diamonds real or lab-grown?
Pandora says it stopped using mined diamonds in 2021 and now uses only lab-grown diamonds, made with Chemical Vapor Deposition. In September 2024 it said it had also stopped using mined gemstones and uses man-made stones such as cubic zirconia. We make no claim about older stock or grading certificates, and a photo cannot show what a stone is made of, so ask a jeweler.
Can a jeweler prove my Pandora is genuine by testing the metal?
No. A metal test shows the metal, not the maker, so a piece can be real silver and still not be Pandora. Use the test for purity, and a review of the whole piece for the brand question.
