Breitling Authentication

How to tell if a Breitling is real: reference checks, the case back serial, the warranty card QR code, the digital passport and Breitling authentication.

Direct answer

To tell if a Breitling is real, identify the model and full reference, then compare the dial, bezel, case and bracelet with Breitling's listing and check that the serial number on the case back matches the warranty card, COSC certificate and any digital passport. The passport, reached through the warranty card's QR code, documents ownership and is supporting context; Breitling says authentication requires sending the watch to a Breitling Main Center.

How to approach Breitling authentication

Model, size and full reference

Name the family, size and full reference, such as Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 AB0138211B1A1, and record dial color, bezel, case material and bracelet or strap before comparing details.

Dial, bezel, case and bracelet

Compare the dial, hands, bezel, case, crown, pushers, bracelet or strap and clasp with Breitling's listing for that exact reference, allowing for service parts, strap changes and wear.

Serial number and papers

Check that the serial number on the case back matches the warranty card, COSC certificate and any digital passport, which Breitling says gives owners access to the certificate of ownership and warranty status.

Photos that settle the question

Photograph the dial straight on and at an angle, the bezel, both case sides, crown and pushers, the case back serial, clasp, bracelet or strap, the warranty card with its QR code and every document, plus a short video of the watch running.

Photo guide

Photos to take of your Breitling watch

The Vereev app's photo guide for watches lists these 10 angles, and the numbers on the drawing match the list.

What to review on Breitling items

Which Breitling model and reference are you checking?

Breitling's current range includes the Navitimer, Superocean, Chronomat and Avenger families, and each watch is listed under a reference, such as AB0138211B1A1 for a Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 or A17376211B1A1 for a Superocean Automatic 44. Breitling lists the Navitimer B01 Chronograph alone in 41, 43 and 46 mm sizes, so compare a watch only with the listing for its exact reference.

The serial number is a different thing. Breitling says the serial number identifies your individual watch and can be found on the documents handed over at purchase or on the case back.

  • Family, model name and case size
  • Full reference, matched to Breitling's listing where possible
  • Dial color, bezel, case material and bracelet or strap
  • Serial number on the case back
  • Warranty card, COSC certificate and digital passport status
  • Purchase source, date and any service history

What to compare on the dial, bezel, case and bracelet

Start with Breitling's listing for the exact reference, then compare the dial, hands, bezel, case, crown, pushers, bracelet or strap and clasp with it and with well-documented examples of the same reference. Color and reference go together on Breitling's listings, such as the turquoise Superocean Automatic 44 A17376211L2S2, so a watch whose colors do not match the claimed reference needs an explanation.

On the Navitimer, two established pre-owned watch retailers, Bob's Watches and Crown & Caliber, describe a circular slide rule bezel dating to 1952 and developed with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. That makes the bezel's scales, printing, alignment with the dial and smooth rotation central to any Navitimer comparison.

Allow for legitimate variation. Service parts, replacement straps, polishing and different production years all change how a genuine watch looks, so a difference needs an explanation rather than an instant verdict.

Where is the Breitling serial number and what should the papers show?

Breitling says the serial number appears on the documents handed over at purchase or on the case back. Check that the number on the case back matches the warranty card, the COSC certificate and any digital passport.

Breitling says all current Breitling watches are chronometer certified to the standard set by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, and that the digital passport gives owners access to the COSC certificate along with the certificate of ownership, user manual and warranty status.

Papers are supporting context, not proof. Cards and certificates can be copied or separated from the watch they came with, so every number has to match the watch itself.

  • Photograph the case back serial in focus and without glare.
  • Photograph the warranty card front and back, including the QR code, covering personal details if you need to.
  • Photograph the COSC certificate or the passport screen that shows it.
  • Check that the serial, reference and dates agree across every document.

What the Breitling digital passport and warranty card QR code do

Breitling says owners can register their watches on Breitling.com and reach documents such as the digital certificate of ownership, COSC certificate, user manual and warranty status through the Breitling Passport. New watches are registered by scanning the QR code on the warranty card and choosing Register my watch, and Breitling says the passport is only available for watches produced since 2013.

Ownership moves through the Breitling account: the owner starts a transfer in My Watches, enters the recipient's details and confirms, and the new owner receives a notification to accept, which Breitling describes as a blockchain-based transaction. Ledger Insights reported in October 2020 that Breitling had extended its Arianee blockchain passports to all its watches, and Robb Report also reported that every watch sold would come with a digital passport.

A passport documents a registered record and its ownership history, but it does not by itself show that the watch in hand is the watch it describes. Check that the passport's serial number matches the case back before a transfer is started, and treat a screenshot as a claim rather than evidence.

How Breitling authenticates a watch and what the warranty covers

Breitling says that to authenticate a watch, it must be sent to one of its Breitling Main Centers. An owner can send it to any Breitling service center or bring it to a Breitling boutique and request a Certificate of Authenticity, and the watch is then passed on. The FAQ reviewed does not list a fee or turnaround time.

Breitling's International Warranty lasts two years for watches without a Breitling manufacture mechanical movement and five years for watches with one. Breitling says warranty information is available by scanning the warranty card's QR code or at any official Breitling retailer, and the warranty excludes damage from tampering by anyone other than an authorized Breitling service center.

Where to buy a Breitling and what to ask a pre-owned seller

Breitling sells new watches through its boutiques and online store, and its warranty page refers owners to official Breitling retailers. For pre-owned and private sales, the watch has to carry the evidence.

Ask for a clear photo of the case back serial, the warranty card, the COSC certificate and the passport status, and agree before payment how the passport will be transferred. Use protected payment and confirm that the delivered watch matches what was reviewed.

When should you get an item-level Breitling review?

Get a review when the price, seller history or photos leave doubt, when the watch has been serviced or modified, or when a listing leans on a card, QR code, passport screenshot or box instead of the watch itself.

Submit sharp photos of the dial, bezel, case sides, crown and pushers, case back, clasp, bracelet or strap and every document, plus a short video of the watch running. A Vereev reviewer compares them with the same reference and notes what photos cannot show, such as the movement behind a solid case back.

Model-specific checks

Most-searched Breitling models

Compare each piece with references for the same version, size, and period. These are the details a reviewer photographs and compares first.

Navitimer B01 Chronograph

Bob's Watches and Crown & Caliber trace the Navitimer to 1952 and a circular slide rule bezel developed with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Breitling lists the current Navitimer B01 Chronograph in 41, 43 and 46 mm sizes. Its many dial and bezel scales give reviewers a lot to compare, and it is a frequent subject of real-versus-fake questions.

Check and photograph

  • Full reference and case size, such as AB0138211B1A1 for a Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43
  • Slide rule bezel scales, printing and alignment with the dial, and whether the bezel turns smoothly
  • Chronograph subdials, hands and pushers against the exact reference
  • Serial number on the case back matched to the warranty card, COSC certificate and any passport
  • Bracelet or strap and clasp against the listing for the reference

Superocean Automatic 44

Breitling lists the Superocean Automatic 44 in many references and colors, such as A17376211B1A1 and the turquoise A17376211L2S2. Because color and reference go together, a listing has to be matched to one exact reference rather than to a generic photo.

Check and photograph

  • Full reference and color, such as A17376211B1A1 or the turquoise A17376211L2S2
  • Dial, bezel and hands against the listing for that reference
  • Serial number on the case back matched to the papers and any passport
  • Bracelet or strap and clasp against the reference
  • COSC certificate in the owner's passport for current watches, where the watch has one

Chronomat B01 42

Breitling lists the Chronomat B01 42 in several versions, such as the stainless steel AB0134101G1A1 in silver. The case material, dial and bracelet should all agree with the listing for the claimed reference.

Check and photograph

  • Full reference, case material and color, such as the stainless steel AB0134101G1A1 in silver
  • Dial, hands and bezel against the exact reference
  • Bracelet and clasp against the listing for the reference
  • Crown and any pushers, which should work smoothly
  • Serial number on the case back matched to the papers and any passport

Warning signs

When Breitling items need a closer look

Each sign is a reason to ask more questions or get an item-level review. None is a verdict on its own.

  • The serial number on the case back does not match the warranty card, COSC certificate or digital passport, or the seller will not show it.
  • The dial, bezel, case size or bracelet does not match Breitling's listing for the claimed reference.
  • On a Navitimer, the slide rule bezel does not turn smoothly or its scales and printing do not line up with the dial.
  • The seller offers a passport screenshot, QR code or warranty card as proof but will not show the case back, dial close-ups and current video of the watch.
  • A seller says the watch has a digital passport but will not show that its serial number matches the watch or explain how the passport will be transferred.
  • Service, replaced parts or modifications are visible but not disclosed or documented.
  • The listing uses stock images or photos of another watch instead of current photos and video of the actual watch.
  • The price is well below comparable watches of the same reference and condition, or the seller presses for fast or off-platform payment.

Common questions

Breitling authentication FAQ

How can I tell if my Breitling is real?

Identify the exact reference, compare the dial, bezel, case and bracelet with Breitling's listing, and check that the serial number on the case back matches the papers and any digital passport. No single detail decides it, and Breitling says a watch must be sent to a Breitling Main Center to be authenticated.

Where is the serial number on a Breitling?

Breitling says the serial number is on the documents handed over at purchase or on the case back of the watch. It should match every document and any digital passport.

Does the Breitling digital passport prove a watch is authentic?

Breitling describes the passport as access to documents such as the digital certificate of ownership, COSC certificate and warranty status, with ownership transfers made through the owner's account. It is supporting context that must match the watch, and for authentication Breitling says the watch must be sent to a Breitling Main Center.

How do I transfer a Breitling digital passport to a new owner?

Breitling says the current owner logs in, finds the watch in My Watches, selects the option to transfer ownership, enters the recipient's details and confirms. The new owner then receives a notification to accept the transfer.

Can Breitling authenticate my watch?

Yes. Breitling says to send the watch to any Breitling service center or bring it to a Breitling boutique and request a Certificate of Authenticity, and the watch is passed on to a Breitling Main Center.

Can an older Breitling get a digital passport?

Breitling says the passport is available for watches produced since 2013. Its FAQ describes claiming one for a watch produced before 2020 by registering it in the My Watches section and entering the watch details.
