A watch can be genuine yet contain later service parts, aftermarket components, or an assembled mismatch that materially changes originality and value.
Establish the claimed reference and configuration
Record case material, size, dial, bezel, bracelet, clasp, movement claim, and production period. Compare the exact combination rather than a broad model family.
Serial and warranty records support chronology but do not prove every component belongs together.
Review exterior components as one assembly
Inspect dial printing, hands, indices, crystal, case geometry, crown, pushers, bezel, caseback, bracelet fit, clasp, engravings, dimensions, and finishing.
Polishing and official service can change surfaces or components. Separate genuine replacement parts from originality claims.
Escalate internal questions to physical inspection
Exterior photos cannot confirm every movement, internal case mark, water-resistance issue, or hidden reference. Qualified watchmakers use proper tools to inspect these areas.
Do not open a valuable watch without training; damage to seals or case can create new risk.
Use warranty cards and archive documents as context
Some watchmakers issue documents from their own records. Audemars Piguet says its Extract from the archives certifies that a watch's case and movement numbers appear in its records and does not warrant the authenticity of the watch, while its Certificate of Authenticity is issued after its experts in Le Brassus examine the watch. Omega says its warranty is only valid if the warranty certificate is dated, fully and correctly completed and stamped by an authorized Omega retailer. Patek Philippe says its Extract from the Archives is neither a proof of authenticity nor a warranty document, and Breitling says a watch must be sent to one of its Breitling Main Centers to be authenticated.
A document speaks to the numbers or the watch it describes. Numbers and cards can be copied or separated from a watch, so match every document to the engraved serial, the reference and the watch in hand.

Can a luxury watch be authenticated from photos?
Photos support exterior and reference checks, but movement and internal questions may require physical inspection.
Do box and papers prove a watch is real?
No. They support provenance but can be copied or separated.
Are service parts counterfeit?
