Researched Audemars Piguet guide
Audemars Piguet Authentication
How to tell if an Audemars Piguet is real: reference checks, Royal Oak bezel details, papers, and what AP's Extract and Certificate of Authenticity cover.
Direct answer
To tell if an Audemars Piguet is real, identify the exact collection and reference, then compare case, bezel, screws, dial, bracelet, caseback and finishing with that reference, and check that numbers and papers agree. Audemars Piguet offers two official documents: an Extract from the archives, which it says does not warrant the watch's authenticity, and a Certificate of Authenticity issued after its experts in Le Brassus examine the watch. Papers and extracts are supporting context, not proof.

How to approach Audemars Piguet authentication
Collection, reference and version
Name the collection and full reference, such as Royal Oak Selfwinding 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06, and record case size, material, dial, bezel, bracelet or strap and movement claim before comparing details.
Case, bezel, screws and finishing
Compare the case shape, the octagonal bezel and its hexagonal screws on a Royal Oak, the dial pattern and the satin-finished and polished surfaces with the same reference, allowing for polishing, service and wear.
Numbers, papers and AP documents
Check that the numbers and reference on the watch, the International Warranty Card and any Extract or Certificate of Authenticity agree with each other and with the watch.
Photos that settle the question
Photograph the dial straight on and at an angle, the bezel and screws, case sides, crown, caseback, clasp and bracelet, any engraved numbers and all papers, plus a short video of the watch running.

What to review on Audemars Piguet items
Which Audemars Piguet collection and reference are you checking?
Start with the collection and the full reference. Audemars Piguet says the Royal Oak has been made in more than 500 iterations since its 1972 debut, and its listings separate versions by reference, such as the stainless steel Royal Oak Selfwinding 41 mm 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06 with a Grande Tapisserie dial.
The Royal Oak Offshore, launched in April 1993 with reference 25721, and the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet are separate lines with their own case designs, so compare a watch only with references from its own line and version.
Audemars Piguet says it records each watch it produces by unique case and movement numbers. Those numbers belong to one watch, while the reference names the model version.
- Collection and model, such as Royal Oak, Royal Oak Offshore or Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet
- Full reference, matched to Audemars Piguet's listing or archive images where possible
- Case size, material, dial color and pattern, bezel, and bracelet or strap
- Case number and any papers or official documents
- Purchase source, date and any service, polishing or modification history
What to compare on the Royal Oak case, bezel, dial and bracelet
Audemars Piguet's own history of the first Royal Oak cases describes a bezel with a circular center and a rounded octagonal periphery, vertically satin-finished and strongly beveled, with eight hexagonal screws fitted with round nuts introduced from the back of the watch to close it. It lists the case middle's finishing as satin-finished top and sides with polished bevels.
Reviewers compare the bezel's shape and finishing, the screws, the dial pattern, hands and markers, how the bracelet meets the case, and the caseback against well-documented examples of the same reference. AP describes the first Royal Oak Offshore as having a large water-resistance gasket protruding from its bezel, and the Code 11.59 as having an octagonal case middle with a round caseback.
Allow for legitimate variation. Polishing can soften bevels and satin finishes, a genuine watch can carry later service parts, and AP's US service terms describe estimates to return modified watches to their original appearance, so a difference needs an explanation rather than an instant verdict.
What case numbers, warranty cards and papers can and cannot show
AP's International Sales Warranty covers new watches for two years from the initial purchase at an Audemars Piguet Boutique or Authorized Dealer, and it can be extended to five years through an online form completed within one year of that purchase. A warranty claim requires the watch together with the International Warranty Card received with it.
Papers help only when they agree with the watch. Cards, boxes and receipts can be copied or separated from the watch they came with, so the numbers and model on any paperwork must match the watch itself.
The Audemars Piguet service pages reviewed here describe requesting official documents through a form rather than an instant public lookup. Treat a number that a seller says was checked online as a claim to verify, not a result.
- Photograph any engraved numbers on the case in focus and without glare.
- Photograph both sides of the warranty card, receipt and any AP document, covering personal details if you need to.
- Check that numbers, reference, dates and seller details are consistent across every document.
- Leave caseback opening and movement checks to Audemars Piguet service or a qualified watchmaker.
What the Extract from the archives and Certificate of Authenticity cover
Audemars Piguet offers two official documents that owners request through a form. It says the Extract from the archives is an official electronic document certifying that a watch's unique case and movement numbers appear in its records, but that it does not warrant the authenticity of the watch.
The Certificate of Authenticity is the document that addresses authenticity. AP says it certifies that the watch, its materials and components are authentic, contains the watch's identifying characteristics and current pictures, and requires its experts in Le Brassus to examine the watch, with a complimentary pick-up service available in some countries.
So an Extract shows that a set of numbers exists in AP's records, not that the watch in front of you carries them or its original parts. A certificate carries more weight, but its pictures and details still need to match the watch you are buying.
What Audemars Piguet service does with counterfeit, stolen or modified watches
AP says the watchmakers in its after-sales network undertake to use only genuine parts. Its US service terms say that if examination reveals counterfeit parts, no service will be performed on the watch.
The same terms say that a watch previously reported as stolen may be reported to the former owner, insurer or authorities and kept until ownership is determined, and that a watch with modified parts receives an estimate for returning it to its original appearance. AP's warranty also excludes watches and components that are not fully genuine.
For a buyer, this means undisclosed replacement parts, aftermarket changes or unclear ownership can surface later at an official service. Ask about service history and ownership before paying, and keep any service invoices with the watch.
Where to buy an Audemars Piguet and what to ask about pre-owned watches
AP's International Warranty applies to new watches bought from Audemars Piguet Boutiques or Authorized Dealers, and AP lists its boutiques on its store finder.
If a seller calls a watch AP certified, ask which AP document supports that claim, such as an Extract from the archives or a Certificate of Authenticity, and check that its details match the watch.
For pre-owned and private sales, the watch has to carry the evidence. Use protected payment, ask for current photos and video of the actual watch, and confirm that the delivered watch matches what was reviewed.
When should you get an item-level Audemars Piguet review?
Get a review when the price, seller history or photos leave doubt, when the watch has been polished, serviced or modified, or when a listing leans on papers or an Extract instead of the watch itself.
Submit sharp photos of the dial, bezel and screws, case sides, crown, caseback, clasp and bracelet, any engraved numbers and all papers, plus a short video of the watch running. A Vereev reviewer compares them with the same reference and notes what photos cannot show, such as the movement behind a solid caseback.
Model-specific checks
Most-searched Audemars Piguet models
Compare each piece with references for the same version, size, and period. These are the details a reviewer photographs and compares first.
Royal Oak
Audemars Piguet dates the Royal Oak to 1972, starting with Model 5402, and says it has made more than 500 iterations, including the steel Royal Oak Selfwinding 41 mm 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06 with a Grande Tapisserie dial. AP calls the eight hexagonal screws on the original's octagonal bezel perhaps the most disruptive element of the 1972 design, and the Royal Oak is a frequent subject of real-versus-fake questions.
Check and photograph
- Full reference, since AP lists many Royal Oak versions such as 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06 and 26240ST.OO.1320ST.05
- Bezel shape and finishing, which AP describes on the first Royal Oak cases as a circular center, rounded octagonal edge, vertical satin finish and strong bevels
- Hexagonal bezel screws, compared with the same reference
- Grande Tapisserie or other dial pattern for the exact reference
- Case and bracelet finishing, with any polishing history disclosed
Royal Oak Offshore
AP launched the Royal Oak Offshore at the Basel Fair in April 1993 as reference 25721, a 42 mm, 14.05 mm thick selfwinding chronograph with a large water-resistance gasket protruding from its bezel. AP lists several current Offshore references, such as 26238TI.OO.A001VE.01 and 26405CE.OO.A030CA.01.A, so a listing must be matched to its exact version.
Check and photograph
- Full reference and case material against AP's listing
- Bezel, screws and any gasket around the bezel, against the same reference
- Pushers, crown and subdials where the reference is a chronograph
- Dial pattern, hands and markers for the exact version
- Strap or bracelet, clasp and any service or replacement parts
Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet
AP describes the Code 11.59 case as an octagonal case middle with a round caseback and, on its steel models, lugs whose upper part is welded to an extra-thin bezel with soldering paste applied by hand while the lower part rests against the caseback. It is a different design from the Royal Oak family, so Royal Oak references do not apply.
Check and photograph
- Full reference, such as 26600NB.OO.D346KB.01 or 15212NB.OO.A002KB.01-AB, against AP's listing
- Octagonal case middle seen from the side and the round caseback
- How the lugs meet the bezel and the caseback
- Dial pattern, hands and markers for the exact reference
- Strap, buckle or clasp and case material
Warning signs
When Audemars Piguet items need a closer look
Each sign is a reason to ask more questions or get an item-level review. None is a verdict on its own.
- The seller presents an Extract from the archives as proof of authenticity, although Audemars Piguet says the Extract does not warrant the authenticity of the watch.
- Numbers on the watch, warranty card, receipt or an AP document do not match each other or the claimed reference.
- A Certificate of Authenticity is offered, but its pictures and identifying details do not match the watch in the listing.
- Bezel shape, screws, dial pattern or case finishing differ from AP's listing or well-documented examples of the same reference.
- Aftermarket changes such as a modified dial or bezel, or replacement parts, are visible but not disclosed or documented.
- The seller calls the watch AP certified or checked but cannot show the AP document or current photos and video of the actual watch.
- The price is well below comparable watches of the same reference and condition, especially with pressure to pay quickly or off-platform.

Audemars Piguet authentication FAQ
How can I tell if my Audemars Piguet is real?
Identify the exact reference, then compare the case, bezel, screws, dial, bracelet, caseback and finishing with that reference and check that numbers and papers agree. No single detail decides it, and movement questions need Audemars Piguet service or a qualified watchmaker.
Does an Audemars Piguet Extract from the Archives prove a watch is real?
No. Audemars Piguet says the Extract certifies that a watch's case and movement numbers appear in its records but does not warrant the authenticity of the watch.
How do I get an Audemars Piguet Certificate of Authenticity?
Audemars Piguet says you request it through its official document form, and that its experts in Le Brassus must examine the watch before issuing it. It also offers a complimentary pick-up service in some countries.
Can I check an Audemars Piguet serial number online?
The Audemars Piguet service pages reviewed here describe requesting documents through a form rather than a public lookup. Numbers can be copied, so they have to agree with the watch, its reference and its papers.
What happens if a fake Audemars Piguet is sent for service?
AP's US service terms say that no service is performed when examination reveals counterfeit parts. They also say a watch previously reported as stolen may be kept until ownership is determined.
