Dyson Airwrap and Supersonic

Dyson Airwrap Real vs Fake: How to Spot a Fake Airwrap or Supersonic

Spot a fake Dyson Airwrap or Supersonic: warning-label typos, plug and fuse faults, the serial label, finish, box and smell, each rated by what it proves.

Quick answer

Check five things: the spelling of the warning and rating text, the plug and pins, the serial label on the cord, the joins and logos, and the box and attachments. The strongest documented signs, from fake dryers, are a misspelled warning and, in the UK, a plug or fuse that fails BS 1363 or BS 1362. No single check proves it is real, because Dyson says fakes copy serial stickers.

Fakes of both tools are made in large numbers. Dyson says a police action in Guangdong, China, on 19 Jan 2026 seized more than 22,000 finished fakes, including Supersonic dryers and Airwrap stylers. ZOL, a Chinese tech site, said in 2019 that better fakes looked over 90% similar to genuine dryers. So this guide rates each of its 7 checks by what it can prove. Start with the table, then work through the checks with the item in good light.

Which checks actually prove anything?

The 7 checks in this guide are not worth the same. The table rates each one by what the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), Dyson and named tests have shown. The ratings are not results of tests by Vereev.

Most of the evidence comes from fake dryers. The only regulator safety report on a fake Airwrap that we found describes a wiring fault inside the tool, which you cannot see. So for the Airwrap, this guide uses Dyson's general signs and the dryer cases, and each check says which it is.

The diagram shows where to look. Markers 1 to 5 match checks 1 to 5, and the same spots make a good photo list for a review.

Price is no safeguard. Shanghai Jinshan police said the fakes in one case were sold at RMB 2,400 each, Beijing News reported on 30 Jan 2026. The paper found that the genuine dryer they copied sold for about RMB 2,600 on e-commerce platforms. Seller and price checks are in our guide to authorized Dyson sellers.

What each check is worth
CheckWhat fakes have shownWhat it is worth
1. Warning and rating labelsMisspelled safety warnings on fake dryers stopped at the UK border (OPSS).Strong sign if wrong. Proves nothing if right.
2. Plug and pins, UK onlyPlugs and fuses that failed BS 1363 and BS 1362 (OPSS).Strong sign, and a safety fault.
3. Serial labelCopied serial stickers, and serials in the genuine pattern (Dyson, OPSS).Missing: ask the seller why. Present proves little.
4. Joins, edges and logosMisapplied logos and uneven joins (Dyson).Medium when several show. Weak alone.
5. Box, attachments and papersFake packaging and accessories seized in bulk, and copied warranty cards (Dyson).Weak. Dyson-refurbished units can come in a new box, not the original.
6. SmellA strong chemical smell when first unpacked (Dyson).Weak alone.
7. Weight, airflow and heatSingle-sample tests that disagree (Which?, ZOL).Weak. We found no official figures to compare.

1. Read the warning and rating labels for spelling mistakes

OPSS tells owners to check the warning label on their Dyson hair dryer. The counterfeits in its reports 2511-0314 and 2410-0131, both published on 23 Dec 2025, carry a misspelled safety warning. The same label photo appears in both reports. It reads "WARNING: Donotuse this applioncenear waterr." and names the model as HD08.

Which?, the UK consumer group, found a similar mistake on a fake Supersonic it bought in 2025: water was spelled with a double r on the casing. Dyson lists typos on the product, the packaging or the documents among the signs likely to show a counterfeit.

What it is worth: a misspelling is a strong warning sign. Correct spelling proves nothing, because Dyson says fakes look nearly identical. Both documented cases are dryers, not the Airwrap. We have no verified photo of a genuine label, so this guide shows no side-by-side comparison.

  • Photograph every printed warning and rating text straight on, in good light, so each letter can be read.
  • Read it word by word. Words that run together without spaces, as on the OPSS label, are a warning sign too.

2. Check the plug and the pins

In OPSS report 2511-0314 (risk level High), the plug of a counterfeit Supersonic did not meet the dimensions of BS 1363, the British standard for plugs. It might not connect securely, so a user could touch a live part. Its fuse did not meet BS 1362, so the plug could overheat or explode. In report 2410-0131 (risk level Serious), the counterfeit dryer labelled HD08 was not properly earthed, and its fuse failed BS 1362.

Which? reported that Electrical Safety First, a UK electrical safety charity, found a fake fuse and plug pins too short for the British Standard on the fake Supersonic that Which? bought in 2025.

In the UK, the plugs supplied with appliances are covered by the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994. In their original text, regulations 11 and 12 cover domestic appliances made for UK mains sockets, at 200V or more and up to 13A. They ask for a standard plug with a BS 1362 fuse of the rating the maker gives, or an approved conversion plug that can be removed only with a tool. Whether a seller broke this rule is for an enforcement body such as Trading Standards to decide. To report a unit that came with a foreign plug and a loose travel adapter, a December 2024 news report gives the Citizens Advice consumer helpline, 0808 223 1133.

A foreign plug does not make a unit fake. A Dyson staff answer on the Dyson Community forum, from 2024, says the Airwrap, Supersonic and Airstrait are built for the voltage of the country of purchase: 230V and 50Hz for UK machines, 120V and 60Hz for US machines. Dyson Australia says the Supersonic Travel adapts to voltages from 100 to 240V. A foreign plug can point to an import, which our guide to authorized Dyson sellers covers.

What it is worth: a plug or fuse fault is a strong sign, and a safety fault whoever made the item. The British Standards apply to UK plugs only. We found no reliable plug check for US or EU Dyson units.

  • Photograph the plug from the front, from the side, and from the end where the pins are.
  • Unplug the tool before you look, and do not open the plug or the tool. Fake fuses in these cases were found by experts and in testing, not by a quick look.

3. Find the serial label on the cord and the box

Dyson puts the serial number of the Supersonic and the Airwrap on the label attached to the power cord, near the plug. It also prints the serial on the box. The example serials on Dyson's registration pages have 13 letters and numbers in three blocks joined by hyphens, such as AB1-UK-ABC1234A.

A label proves little. Dyson says counterfeits include copies of its serial number stickers and warranty cards, and in March 2026 it said fakes carry serial numbers that look official. OPSS recorded the counterfeit Supersonic in report 2511-0314 with a serial in that same pattern.

What it is worth: if the label is missing or cannot be read, ask the seller why. A label that looks right proves little, and a serial that registers proves nothing. The Corrale keeps the serial on the back of the main body. For the Airstrait, Dyson's own pages differ, so check both the back of the e-box and the cord near the plug. Our Dyson serial number guide shows where Dyson says to find it on each type of machine, and what a lookup result means.

  • Photograph the cord label and the box label so every character can be read.
  • Check that the two serials match. A mismatch is a question for the seller.

4. Look at joins, edges, buttons and logos

Dyson lists poor manufacturing finish as likely to show a counterfeit: misapplied Dyson logos, uneven joins in the materials, scratches and uneven edges.

ZOL compared one fake Supersonic with a genuine one in 2019. It found faded or irregular red dots on the buttons and near the air intake, blurry indicator lights, stiff buttons with sharp edges, and intake mesh holes that were smaller and unevenly spaced. These findings come from one sample and may be dated.

Current fakes copy the look closely. Dyson said in 2026 that fakes look nearly the same as genuine machines, down to the logos. Which? said in 2025 that almost all the suspect items it bought looked identical to the genuine ones at first glance.

What it is worth: medium when several defects show together, weak alone.

  • Photograph seams, buttons, logos and the air intake close up, straight on, in good light.

5. Inspect the box, the attachments and the paperwork

Dyson lists poor-quality packaging, and typos on the packaging or the documents, as signs of a counterfeit. But it also says officials found more than a quarter of a million pieces of fake Dyson packaging in the January 2026 action, so a convincing box proves little. Which? found the box colors of its fake Supersonic less vivid in 2025. In 2019, ZOL found blurrier, paler box print and a foreign-language label stuck on upside down.

Fakes can come as full sets. The counterfeit Airwrap in OPSS report 2112-0563 was a navy and copper-gold styler listed on eBay as a gift edition, with £339 in the listing title, and it came with accessories and a carry case. Dyson says 30,000 fake accessories were seized in January 2026. It also says fakes copy warranty cards, and that some sellers offer fake proof of purchase.

A plain box is not proof of a fake. Dyson Australia and Dyson UK say their refurbished machines come in a brand-new recyclable box, not always the original packaging.

Attachments vary by model. Dyson says the Supersonic Travel shares attachments with the Supersonic and Supersonic Nural. Dyson Australia said in June 2026 that it is currently not compatible with Supersonic r attachments. A poor fit can mean a different model, not a fake.

What it is worth: weak.

  • Photograph the box on all sides, every attachment, the case and any paperwork.
  • A sealed box proves nothing on its own, because fake packaging is made too.

6. Notice a chemical smell when you first unpack it

Dyson's release of 11 Mar 2026 added a sign missing from its older pages: counterfeits often give off a strong or unusual chemical smell, especially when first unpacked and used. Dyson does not say how often, or on which models.

ZOL's tester noticed a plastic smell in the airflow of the fake Supersonic in 2019. AGDmaniak, a Polish appliance site, noticed a plastic smell from a cheap lookalike styler sold under another brand in December 2025, and the smell faded after a few uses.

What it is worth: weak alone, and useful only when the item is new. The absence of a smell proves nothing. Do not switch on an item you already suspect just to check for a smell: in OPSS testing, a counterfeit dryer smoked and its parts began to melt.

7. Weight, airflow and heat: weak signs only

Which? found its fake Supersonic about 10% lighter than the genuine one in 2025. ZOL found a different result once the cord was counted. In 2019 it weighed the genuine body at 454 g, or 574 g with the cord, and the fake body at 399.5 g, but 661 g with its longer cord. So the answer depends on what you weigh. We found no official Dyson weight, so this guide gives no figure to compare against.

Weight also differs by design. Dyson says the Supersonic Travel is 32% smaller and 25% lighter than the full-size Supersonic. Compare only the same model.

ZOL's 2019 test found that the fake blew weaker air than the genuine dryer in all three of its readings, and in the highest one 12.93 m/s against 16.16 m/s. It also heated a glass surface less and was about 10 dB louder. You cannot repeat these tests at home, and they come from one sample.

ZOL also found that both dryers passed the popular test of holding hair upright in the airflow. That test proves nothing.

What it is worth: weak. These are single samples, and we found no Dyson figures to compare with.

Is it a dupe or a fake?

A dupe is a lookalike sold under its own name. A counterfeit is an item carrying the Dyson name or logo that Dyson did not make. Dyson says counterfeits are not made by Dyson or with genuine Dyson parts.

AGDmaniak tested a dupe in December 2025: an Airwrap lookalike sold under its own brand, Augusdea, model WT-638, made by Guangzhou Welltop Intelligent Appliance. It cost about 50 zł with coupons, usually 120 zł. It had 1,000 W, no filter and a fixed airflow, and only the temperature could be changed. That is a dupe, not a counterfeit.

Some listings mix the two. Which? reported in August 2020 that, in a Shanghai court case, phrases claiming an item was suitable for Dyson were used on shopping sites to tie fakes to the brand. We cannot give legal advice on buying or selling dupes. If an item carries the Dyson name or logo, judge it as a possible counterfeit.

Is a fake Dyson dangerous? When to stop using it

The regulator records show real risks. In OPSS report 2511-0314 (risk level High), a user could touch a live part, and the plug could overheat or explode. In OPSS report 2410-0131 (risk level Serious), the dryer failed to cut off when its airflow was restricted, gave off excessive smoke, and its interior parts began to melt. EU Safety Gate alert SR/00693/26, published on 4 Mar 2026 and notified by the UK for Northern Ireland, describes the same faults on a dryer labelled HD08 as a serious risk of fire. The measure taken was compulsory destruction.

In OPSS report 2112-0563, published on 27 Mar 2022 (risk level Serious), the counterfeit Airwrap's internal wiring had too little creepage and clearance distance, the safety gaps around live parts. That is a serious risk of electric shock and fire. OPSS told owners to stop using it. Electrical Safety First, a UK charity, tells owners of that Airwrap to stop using it immediately and contact the retailer.

Suffolk Trading Standards stopped 500 counterfeit Dyson hair dryers at the Port of Felixstowe in 2024. In testing, they overheated, smoked and melted inside and out, Ipswich.co.uk reported. The UK Intellectual Property Office estimates that 98% of counterfeit electrical goods fail product safety tests, according to a Border Force release of 21 Dec 2023, which does not cite the study.

Dyson says it does not recommend using counterfeit Dyson products, but it gives no test data. The evidence above comes from regulators.

  • Stop using it if it sparks, smokes, overheats or the plug fits loosely. Unplug it only if you can do so safely.
  • Have it checked by Dyson or an authorized service center. Photograph it and keep your evidence first, because in the US Dyson may keep or destroy a machine it finds counterfeit.
  • A photo review cannot test whether an item is safe.

What no self-check or photo can prove

Some faults cannot be seen from outside. The wiring fault in the counterfeit Airwrap of OPSS report 2112-0563 was inside the casing, and the dryer in report 2410-0131 failed to cut off only under restricted-airflow testing.

The outside can be copied too. Dyson says fakes look nearly identical and copy serial stickers and warranty cards. It lists the claim that a product can be registered on its website among the tactics of counterfeit dealers.

So a self-check or a photo review gives an opinion on the look, the labels and the parts shown. It cannot judge electrical safety, heat control or airflow.

If you think your Dyson is fake or you are still unsure

Stop using it if it shows any of the safety signs above. Then use the seller's or the marketplace's returns and buyer protection, and check the time limit. Keep the listing, your messages, the payment record and photos of the labels, the plug and the box.

Dyson will not service or refund a counterfeit. In the US, if Dyson inspects a machine and finds it is counterfeit, it may return it to you. Or it may keep or destroy it and give you a letter confirming it is counterfeit, which you can show the seller or your card company. Photograph the item and keep all your evidence before you send it. Dyson Japan provides a document proving a counterfeit on request. Our Dyson authentication hub has the full table by market. In the UK, OPSS told owners of the counterfeit Airwrap in report 2112-0563 to seek redress from the seller. In December 2023, Border Force advised consumers who think they bought counterfeit goods to contact Action Fraud.

For a second opinion, open the Vereev app and search for Dyson. If your version of the app does not list it yet, type the brand name, Dyson, and continue. Then photograph the five areas in the diagram, plus every attachment and the case. The app shows the cost before you confirm.

AI assists and human experts decide. A reviewer may ask for more photos. If the photos cannot settle it, the result says so and the tokens are refunded. Vereev is independent. It is not Dyson, and it does not issue Dyson certificates.

Common questions

What readers ask about this topic

How can you tell if a Dyson Airwrap is real?

Check the printed text for spelling mistakes, the plug, the serial label on the cord near the plug, the joins and logos, and the box and attachments. No single check proves it is real, because Dyson says fakes copy serial stickers and warranty cards. Most documented signs come from fake dryers, so several checks that agree are your best evidence.

How do I know if my Dyson Supersonic is fake?

UK regulators found misspelled safety warnings, and plugs or fuses that failed British Standards, on counterfeit dryers. Check those first, then the serial label, the finish and the box. A correct label proves nothing alone.

Are fake Dyson hair dryers dangerous?

They can be. OPSS found counterfeit dryers with plug and fuse faults, and one that failed to cut off, smoked and began to melt in testing. The UK Intellectual Property Office estimates that 98% of counterfeit electrical goods fail product safety tests, according to a Border Force release of 21 Dec 2023, which cites no study.

Do fake Dysons smell?

Dyson said in March 2026 that counterfeits often give off a strong or unusual chemical smell, especially when first unpacked and used. A smell can fade, so it is a weak sign alone, and the absence of a smell proves nothing.

Are fake Dysons lighter than real ones?

Not reliably. Which? found its fake Supersonic about 10% lighter, but ZOL found a fake whose body was lighter and whose whole unit was heavier, because of a longer cord. Dyson says the Supersonic Travel is 25% lighter than the full-size Supersonic, so compare only the same model.

Does the hair test prove a Dyson dryer is real?

No. In a 2019 test by ZOL, a Chinese tech site, both the fake and the genuine dryer held hair upright in the airflow.

Is an Airwrap dupe the same as a fake?

No. A dupe is a lookalike sold under its own name. An item that carries the Dyson name or logo but was not made by Dyson is a counterfeit.

Can a fake Dyson come with a warranty card and receipt?

Yes. Dyson says counterfeits copy its warranty cards, and that some sellers offer fake proof of purchase. Paperwork can support a seller's story, but it is not proof.

What should I do if my Dyson Airwrap is fake?

Stop using it if it shows any safety sign, keep the evidence, and ask the seller or the marketplace for a refund under its buyer protection. Dyson will not service or refund a counterfeit. For an independent opinion, send guided photos to Vereev.
