Coach Authentication

How to tell if a Coach bag is real: exact style and size, leather and hardware, interior patches and numbers, Coach Outlet products, and fake site warnings.

Direct answer

To tell if a Coach bag is real, identify the exact style, size and material first, such as a Tabby Shoulder Bag 26 or a Pillow Tabby, then compare the leather or canvas, hardware, closure, stitching, lining and interior labels with same-style references. Coach does not authenticate bags on request, and we found no Coach serial number lookup, so treat any number or patch as supporting context. Check the seller too, since Coach lists where it sells.

How to approach Coach authentication

Exact style, size, and channel

Name the style and size, such as a Tabby Shoulder Bag 26 or 20, a Pillow Tabby, a Cassie Crossbody Bag 19 or a Willow, and note whether it came from a Coach retail store, a Coach outlet store, an authorized store or Coach (Re)Loved.

Leather, canvas, and hardware

Compare the material, such as polished pebble leather, glovetanned leather, nappa or Signature coated canvas, along with the stitching, edges, lining and hardware, with references for the same style, size and material.

Interior patches, labels, and numbers

Photograph any interior patch, label and number and check that they fit the style and era, since the Coach pages we reviewed offer no number lookup and Coach does not authenticate on request.

Photos a reviewer needs

Photograph the front, back, sides and base, the hardware and closure up close, the stitching and edges, the lining, every interior patch or label, the strap attachments, and the receipt or listing.

What to review on Coach items

Which Coach style, size, and version are you checking?

Coach sells many styles in several sizes and materials, so start with the exact one. Coach's own site lists styles such as the Tabby Shoulder Bag 26 and 20, the Cassie Crossbody Bag 19, the Rogue, the Brooklyn Shoulder Bag 39 and the Swinger Bag 20, and fashion and resale coverage adds the Pillow Tabby and the Willow.

Fashion and resale coverage describes the Tabby as a modern take on a 1970s Coach archive design, made in several sizes and materials, and the Pillow Tabby as a version in ultra-soft leather. Because versions differ in size, material and hardware, a detail that is normal on one Tabby can look wrong next to another.

Record the style name, size number, material, color and any collaboration, such as Disney x Coach, before judging details. Compare a bag only with references for the same version.

  • Style name and size number, such as Tabby Shoulder Bag 26 or 20
  • Material, such as polished pebble leather, glovetanned leather, nappa or Signature coated canvas
  • Color and hardware finish
  • Collaboration or special edition name, if any
  • Where it was first bought: a Coach retail or outlet store, coach.com, an authorized store, or Coach (Re)Loved

How do Coach Outlet bags relate to Coach retail bags?

Coach says authentic Coach products are sold by Coach retail and outlet stores, online at coach.com and world.coach.com, and at authorized department and specialty stores. Tapestry, Coach's parent company, says Coach outlet stores sell manufactured-for-outlet product and discontinued retail inventory.

That means a bag bought at a Coach outlet can be a genuine made-for-outlet style rather than a retail style, so compare it with references from the same channel and season. Coach's one-year warranty for quality-related repairs covers all Coach Collection products and Coach Outlet handbags, briefcases and small leather goods.

Look-alike outlet websites are a separate problem. Coach names coachoutletfactory.org as one example of a website offering counterfeit product.

How do reviewers compare leather, canvas, hardware, and stitching?

Coach works in many materials. Fashion and resale coverage describes polished pebble leather, glovetanned leather, nappa leather and Signature coated canvas across its styles, and describes the Tabby Shoulder Bag in pebble leather.

Hardware differs by style: that coverage describes Coach's C hardware on the front of the Tabby and a turnlock closure on the Cassie and the Willow. Reviewers compare the hardware's shape, finish and fit, the stitching, the edges, the lining and the strap attachments with references for the same style, size and material.

Tapestry says manufacturers of Coach products were primarily located in Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines during fiscal 2023, so compare any country label with same-era references rather than expecting one country. Wear, conditioning, repairs and restoration also change leather and hardware, so record them as condition rather than as a verdict.

  • Material surface and grain, compared with the same material
  • Hardware shape, finish and alignment on the front and at the strap attachments
  • Stitching along the edges, handles and strap
  • Edge finish and lining
  • Interior pockets and layout, compared with the same style

What can a creed patch, style number, or serial number tell you?

Buyers often ask what the number on a Coach bag's interior patch means or where to look up a Coach serial number. The Coach pages we reviewed, including its brand protection, repair and (Re)Loved pages, do not explain these numbers or offer a lookup, and Coach says it does not respond to requests to authenticate product.

Treat any patch, label or number as one detail that has to agree with the bag's style, size, material, hardware and era. A printed or stamped number can be copied from a genuine bag, and a missing or unfamiliar number is a reason to ask questions, not a verdict on its own.

  • Photograph every interior patch, label and number flat and in focus
  • Match the style name and size in the listing with the bag itself
  • Compare the patch or label with references for the same style and era
  • Ask for the receipt or order confirmation, which Coach's repair service also asks for to find purchase history

Where does Coach sell, and how do you spot fake Coach websites?

Coach says it does not sell its products at flea markets, through street vendors or in mall kiosks. It says websites offering counterfeit product often misspell Coach in the web address, may imitate the layout of coach.com and may appear in search results, citing coachoutletfactory.org, coachbags.biz and coachonline.us.com as examples.

Coach says it works with law enforcement and customs officials in the United States and around the world to stop the shipment and sale of counterfeits, and Tapestry says it polices its intellectual property and pursues infringers at home and abroad. You can report counterfeit listings through Coach's reporting form, its hotline at 1-833-768-1778 or its text line at 1-240-448-4442, and Coach says form and hotline reports can be anonymous.

Coach also says it does not respond to requests to authenticate product or to identify authorized distributors. Treat a seller's claim that Coach verified a bag with caution.

  • Check that the site is coach.com, world.coach.com or an authorized store you have confirmed
  • Look for misspellings of Coach or extra words like outlet or factory in a look-alike web address
  • Avoid flea markets, street vendors and mall kiosks, which Coach says it does not use
  • Keep the listing, messages and payment record in case you need to report the seller

What does Coach (Re)Loved do with pre-loved bags?

Coach (Re)Loved is Coach's program for pre-loved Coach pieces, which Coach says gives them another chapter through authentication, cleaning, repair, restoration and creative reimagining. Coach says its craftspeople assess each piece, then clean, repair and restore it as needed.

The program sells restored, vintage and upcrafted pieces, such as a Restored Tabby Shoulder Bag 20 and a Vintage Metropolitan Brief, and lets owners trade in gently used bags through Coach (Re)Loved Exchange for a credit. Coach describes authentication as one step inside this program; it does not describe it as a service for checking a bag bought elsewhere.

When should you get an independent review?

Get an item-level review when you are buying outside Coach stores, coach.com or an authorized department or specialty store, when the style, material or hardware do not line up with same-version references, when the seller relies on a number or patch alone, or when the photos leave out the interior.

Vereev is independent of Coach and Tapestry and reviews the style, materials, construction, hardware, labels and seller evidence together, recording what the photos can and cannot show. Its result is not a Coach determination.

  • Front, back, both sides and the base, in even light
  • Hardware and closure up close
  • Stitching and edges along the handles and strap
  • The lining and every interior patch, label and number
  • Strap attachments and any detachable strap
  • Receipt, listing and seller messages

Model-specific checks

Most-searched Coach models

Compare each piece with references for the same version, size, and period. These are the details a reviewer photographs and compares first.

Tabby Shoulder Bag

Fashion and resale coverage describes the Tabby as a reworked 1970s Coach archive design in many materials, and Coach lists it in sizes including 26 and 20. Size, material and hardware differ between versions, so match the exact size and material before comparing details.

Check and photograph

  • Size number and material from the listing or receipt, matched to the bag
  • The C hardware on the front: shape, finish and alignment
  • Stitching and edges along the flap and strap
  • Interior layout, lining and any patch or label
  • Detachable strap, its hardware and its attachments

Pillow Tabby

Fashion and resale coverage describes the Pillow Tabby as a version of the same 1970s archive design made in ultra-soft leather. Because it looks and feels different from the structured Tabby, compare it only with Pillow Tabby references of the same size.

Check and photograph

  • Size, from the listing or receipt
  • Leather surface and seams, compared with the same size and color
  • The C hardware on the front and how it is finished
  • Interior pockets and lining
  • Handle, strap and attachments

Cassie Crossbody

Coach lists the Cassie Crossbody Bag 19, and fashion and resale coverage describes the Cassie with a turnlock closure. Confirm the size number and material before comparing the turnlock and interior.

Check and photograph

  • Size number and material from the listing or receipt
  • Turnlock closure: shape, finish and how it sits on the flap
  • Stitching and edges on the flap and strap
  • Interior compartments and lining
  • Strap and attachment hardware

Willow

Fashion and resale coverage describes the Willow in several shapes, including a shoulder bag, a bucket bag, a camera bag and a tote, with a turnlock closure. Because the shapes differ, identify which Willow you have before comparing hardware and layout.

Check and photograph

  • Shape and size: shoulder bag, bucket bag, camera bag or tote
  • Turnlock closure: shape, finish and fit
  • Material, such as pebble leather or Signature coated canvas, matched to the listing
  • Interior compartments and lining
  • Straps and attachment hardware

Warning signs

When Coach items need a closer look

Each sign is a reason to ask more questions or get an item-level review. None is a verdict on its own.

  • The listing uses stock images or a single angle, with no photos of the hardware, stitching, lining or interior labels.
  • The website misspells Coach in its address or copies the look of coach.com without being coach.com, world.coach.com or a store you have confirmed, a pattern Coach warns about with examples such as coachoutletfactory.org.
  • The bag is sold at a flea market, by a street vendor or from a mall kiosk, channels Coach says it does not use.
  • The seller says Coach verified the bag, although Coach says it does not respond to requests to authenticate product.
  • The seller offers an interior number or patch as the only evidence and will not show the hardware, stitching or lining.
  • The style name, size or material in the listing does not match the bag in the photos.
  • The hardware, closure or material does not match references for the same style, size and material.
  • A new bag is priced far below Coach, outlet and authorized store prices without a clear reason.

Common questions

Coach authentication FAQ

How can you tell if a Coach bag is real?

Identify the exact style, size and material, then compare the leather or canvas, hardware, closure, stitching, lining and interior labels with same-style references, and check where the bag was sold. No single detail settles it, and Coach says it does not respond to requests to authenticate product.

Does Coach authenticate bags?

Coach says it does not respond to requests to authenticate product or identify authorized distributors. Its (Re)Loved program lists authentication among the steps for pre-loved Coach pieces it restores and resells or takes in through trade-ins.

Does the Coach outlet sell fake bags?

Coach says authentic Coach products are sold by Coach retail and outlet stores, and Tapestry says Coach outlet stores sell manufactured-for-outlet product and discontinued retail inventory. An outlet bag may differ from a retail style, so compare it with references from the same channel, and be wary of look-alike sites such as coachoutletfactory.org, which Coach cites as a counterfeit example.

Can I look up a Coach serial number?

The Coach pages we reviewed do not offer a serial number lookup or explain what interior patch numbers mean, and Coach says it does not respond to authentication requests. Treat a number as one detail that must agree with the style, materials, hardware and era, since a number can be copied.

Where are Coach bags made?

Tapestry, Coach's parent company, says manufacturers of Coach products were primarily located in Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines during fiscal 2023. Compare any country label with references from the same style and era rather than expecting one country for every Coach bag.

How do I report a fake Coach bag or website?

Coach says you can report infringing and counterfeit listings through its counterfeit reporting form or its hotline at 1-833-768-1778, and it also lists a text line, 1-240-448-4442. It says reports through the form and hotline can be made anonymously.
