What the Numbers on a Maison Margiela Label Mean

Maison Margiela says it introduced its Numeric Coding in 1997 as an index of its lines, and that each item belongs to one of 13 lines. The circled number on the tag identifies the line to which a garment or object belongs.

The detail to read is therefore which number is circled, and whether that line fits the item. The label names the claimed line; it is not a serial number and it does not identify one individual piece.

Maison Margiela's Numeric Coding page lists the lines below. It marks two of them, fine jewelry (12) and objects and publications (13), as not currently active.

Some lines began long after the house itself. Maison Margiela gives 2005 as the origin of Line 22, its collection of shoes, and says its first shoes were presented in 1989 as part of Line 1. Keep this in mind when reading the label on an older pair.

Start with what the item is. Shoes normally belong to Line 22, bags and small leather goods to Line 11, the collection for women to Line 1 and the collection for men to Line 10, while MM6 Maison Margiela pieces belong to Line 6. A circled number that does not fit the item is a reason to ask more questions, not a verdict, because special projects and older pieces can differ.

Then compare the label itself with references for the same line, season and product type: the typeface, spacing and print quality of the numbers, how cleanly the circle is drawn, how the label is attached, and where it sits. Counterfeiters reproduce the numbered label, so a neat label on a poorly built item is still a problem.

Maison Margiela describes its four white stitches as a signature. Its product pages list them at the back of garments, such as a numeric T-shirt finished with four white stitches at the back, and its Tabi and Replica shoe pages list white stitching at the back.

The stitches are easy to copy, so check them the same way as the label: placement, spacing and thread against the same product, and whether they agree with everything else about the item.

OTB, the group that owns Maison Margiela, announced in June 2024 that it would insert an NFC chip in every garment or accessory of its luxury brands starting from the Fall/Winter 2024-25 collections. Customers can use a smartphone to open a digital authenticity certificate with information on the product and its origin, registered on the Aura blockchain platform.

Maison Margiela's certificate site says no personal data is collected through the NFC during authentication and that owners can ask Client Service to deactivate the NFC technology at any time. An item from before the rollout, or one whose NFC has been deactivated, will not respond, and a chip, like a label, only helps when the item around it also agrees.

Replica is a Maison Margiela product name. The house uses it for its Replica sneakers, which it says are inspired by Austrian sports shoes from the 1970s, and for its Replica fragrances, so the word on a box or label says nothing about authenticity either way.

MM6 Maison Margiela is listed by the house as Line 6, a separate line from the collections for women and men. Compare an MM6 piece with MM6 references rather than mainline ones.

A label identifies the line an item claims to belong to. It cannot confirm that the item was made by Maison Margiela, because labels, stitches and numbers are among the first details counterfeiters reproduce.

Use the label alongside the exact model and season, materials, construction, soles or lining, hardware, condition and the seller's evidence.
